Starting a Touch Rugby programme in a school does not need to be complex. Begin by checking what resources are already available. A ball, cones and open space is all that is required. PE staff or local coaches can help deliver initial sessions.
Begin with short sessions during PE lessons. Focus on the core rules. Let pupils learn through game-based activities. Use mini games that teach passing, movement and defence. Keep things simple and enjoyable.
Once the basics are in place, build from there. This game can be incredibly tactical and is like an onion - you peel back 1 layer of tactics and you never stop finding new ways to innovate and learn, it is addictive!
Many schools then organise friendly matches with nearby schools. Use mixed teams, or single gendered teams to make the most of numbers. Involve older pupils as referees or young leaders. Create leadership roles that give pupils ownership.
Use simple session plans and change drills often to keep interest high. Make sure all players have the chance to play and improve. Focus on enjoyment and involvement.
A good school Touch Rugby programme does not rely on large numbers or elite athletes. It grows from regular sessions, a positive culture and a clear structure.
The best part about Touch in school - it's SO SIMPLE!
Run forwards, pass backwards
Someone touches you with the ball - put it on the floor
defence have to retreat 7m to give the attack time and space
THAT IS IT!!
Then you can layer in rules such as:
the person picking the ball up can't score or get touched
The attacking team only have 6 touches
Simple. Easy. Would recommend.
