Touch Rugby is one of the few team sports where boys and girls can play together on equal terms. It is a safe, inclusive and fast-paced format. Many schools now use mixed teams as a way to make sport more accessible.
Mixed formats help pupils learn how to work with different teammates. It encourages respect, clear communication and teamwork. Players learn how to use space, support one another and share the ball. The game rewards decision making and movement rather than size or strength.
To run a successful mixed programme, keep team sizes even. Rotate players often. Use rules that encourage shared play, such as requiring both boys and girls to handle the ball during a play.
Build a strong team culture where all players feel valued. Pair players up for drills and ask different pupils to lead warm-ups or team talks. Small changes can make a big difference in building confidence and connection.
Mixed gender Touch works well in PE lessons and in school teams. It gives everyone a chance to contribute and learn together. That makes it a great fit for schools focused on inclusion and equality.
